I've been marching w/ Hanna for 2 yrs now and saw you guys march for the first time at the contest (where? I can't remember, but it was October 23, 1999) You guys just blew me away. I have a newfound respect for you and your entire band. Of course we had an absolute horrible nite - I guess b/c we weren't used to that freezing cold and windy weather...but you guys sure didn't. Now, I'm sorry to say I was one of those yellow "Hanna Bananas" that for the past 2 yrs always thought of Byrnes n a not-so-nice way b/c that's how it was when I first got here, and I hafta apologize. But now that I've actually, and finally, seen you guys...I just love ya'll! Congrats on all of your many accomplishments and if Hanna's ever been rude to ya'll...I'm sure it's just b/c we're jealous! Newberry placed 3rd at the 1A-3A Lower State Championships Saturday, and we're going on to the 1A/3A State Competition, which is hosted at our school. Unfortuantly for us, we didn't do so great this past Sat. It was embarrassing for us to do so badly and we feel that it was our worst performance this season. Even if I'm not always 100% cooperative in practice, or on the BUSES, you can be sure that when it's time to perform, Ms. Hart is giving 110%. We've been through it all this season; from trash bags and numb fingers, to all of Mr. Mac's lectures, but none of this has been able to keep our band thus far, and I doubt nothing will. I was a member of the Rebel Regiment from 1982-1985. I was in the first AAA State Championship Band of 1983. I was a sophomore. This was Mr. Mac's first year with us. I thought winning a State Championship was the greatest thing ever to happen to a band until October 9, 1999. You won the Southeast Regional Championship of BOA!!! That was awewome. I went to BOA in 1984 and we made the finals and took, I think, 6th place that night. That was an accomplish in itself considering it was the first time our band had been to a BOA competion. Keep up the good work and take UPPERSTATE and STATE!!! Good luck to Matthew Arms, Amy Genoble, Daniel Hautamaki, and Megan Blair, especially. They just happen to be my family. Make us proud like you always do. I've been to every competition and ballgame where you have performed, starting with Meet the Rebel Regiment night. You have only gotten better each and every time. The show this year is spectacular. Mr. McIntyre and the rest of the staff have once again outdone themselves. You are the keepers of a proud tradition which began nearly two decades ago and has grown through the efforts of thousands of dedicated individuals. Last year's band was the best in the storied history of the Rebel Regiment and one of the very finest in the state of South Carolina in the decade or so I've been interested in the SC marching band scene. The group of seniors which leads you now has been a cornerstone of the 3 most successful years in Byrnes history and is striving for their 4th upper state championship, 3rd state championship, and 4th BOA regional finals appearance. That's a phenomenal record of achievement. As a former member of the Rebel Regiment I'm proud of the way you have taken the foundation laid by those who came before you and built your own castle upon it. The tools for unlimited success have been laid before you. This year's show is more exciting, more energetic, and more demanding both visually and musically than anything the Rebel Regiment has ever performed. If you focus each day in rehearsal and devote your body and mind to the task at hand, you'll achieve more than any other Byrnes band, perhaps any other SC band, has ever achieved. 1998 was the best year in the band's history, but it doesn't have to remain so if you don't want it to. Never allow your best to exist in the past. I challenge you to show everyone across the state of South Carolina and the southeastern United States that 1998 was merely a prelude of things to come.
